Are cold sores contagious before they tingle (prodrome stage)?
I’ve read different opinions on the stages of HSV-1 as it relates to contagiousness. I remain confused. Obviously, the virus is contagious when the sore is present and it makes sense that it can also spread when you first feel the tingle.
Here’s what my confusion comes in:
Some folks say that HSV-1 can even be transmitted before the tingle (first symptom) occurs. If this is true, doesn’t it mean that my wife and I can never have oral sex again? We both get cold sores and avoid any kissing/oral sex from first tingle till total scab healing.
If you can transmit it from upstairs to downstairs while being pre-symptomatic, aren’t you just playing oral roulette? This has got me freaked out as we had some action a day or 2 before I had my initial tingle. Should I be worried?
The sores are enough of a pain on the lips-don’t even want to think about them on our bits.

hi i had a cold sore on my lip last week it has healed since which has left me with a small scab on my lip. i was just wondering when is it safe to kiss someone? cause i haven’t been able to kiss my girlfriend in like a week. thanks for your help
if you have a scab you are still contagious, you shed virus for up to 3 weeks after there is no sign at all of an outbreak, and for up to a week before an outbreak occurs. In other words, you never know.. except when you have an active lesion, whether or not you are contagious… that is why 1 out 4 people in our country has the virus.

alright so i figure its a cold sore , after much questioning
and so there is YELLOW CRUST EVERYWHERE , its like dust . and easily comes off, no scabs nothing .
BY The way cold sores dont always group together right ? cause mines didnt and also its all over my face . so back to the original question when am i done , i have exams next week and wasnt allowed to go to school, due to the contagious part and the fact that its everywhere. ugh nvm im still confused wether its a cold sore -_- its extremely tingly still -_-

so a little background info… I had bought this lip balm with aloe in it a while ago, and started using it. after like a week my lips started to itch, get bumpy, then scab a little. I stopped using it, and after a couple days it went away. THen, I started using it again, and this si what happened: more little bumps began to appear on my lips. they were itchy and dry. Then they started to get a little red, and the itchyness spread to around my lips, where it looked like a rash. Soon the outsides started to scab which is yellow in color. At its worse it was all around my lips, but on some parts its starting to ease away a little, but it is still bad. Im soooo embarrassed to be seen in public! Then today I started seeing little bumps on the underside of my tongue…
The last time I kissed someone was on the 10th, when I said goodbye to my boyfriend. This is still when my lips were still not 100% better from the first outbreak, but two days after he went away they were back to normal, and then that is hwen I started using the chapstick again, and then a day or two later this all happened…
Im really not sure what is wrong! Im really sad because in two days I see my boyfriend again because Im going back to school, and the last thing I want to tell him is that sorry I have this stupid lip thing again so I cant kiss you… jfale jsflksjd its pissing me off!!! if anyone has an answer or can tell me what i should do to make it go away (ive been using the medicated blistex) or if it is contagious or not, that would be veeerrryyy helpful….. thanks..
I’m thinking an allergic reaction broke the skin of your lips, and then an infection took hold in the broken skin. It may be thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth)
